Sacred Destinations and Journeys Along The Way is a photography art book that portrays the artistic presence of Lumia, a form of abstract light that looks like textured smoke and appears in any number of sensuous shapes. In some cases Lumia takes on the resemblance of faces, creatures and landscapes; sometimes familiar – sometimes phantasmagorical, but easily something that a viewer could spend a long time contemplating.

The presence of Lumia is organic and reflective both literally and figuratively. Lumia is organic because it is a natural reaction of light being massaged and morphed by its environment to create the luminous patterns that it does. It is reflective because as one gazes at a Lumia pattern, the image often creates a meditative moment of appreciation for the awe inspiring image that it presents.

My various blog posts contemplate some of those awe inspiring Lumia moments;

LIGHT ART ACROSS CENTURIES

Lumia blog

Light art of which Lumia is a part of has a heritage that has been explored for at least 300 years or more in considering the relationship between color and music. Mind you – that these ideas were being thought about way before Laserium existed. Some were even in play before electricity had been discovered.

POETRY IN MOTION

Lumia blog - poetry in motion

Watching Lumias glide through their animated dance becomes a transcendent experience as a visual homage to the ‘music of the spheres.’

LUMIA and HOLLYWOOD / PART I

Lumia blog hollywood 1

In Lumia’s pure form it often presents itself with the mysterious look of an almost spiritual presence. Apparently Hollywood has had the same reaction, and relegated it to a visual effect reflecting a mysterious and other worldly look of some spiritual effigy. Watch and see for yourself…

LUMIA and HOLLYWOOD / PART II

Lumia blog Hollywood 2

Lumia suggests the presence of a mysterious and other worldly look of some spiritual effigy, causing a certain amount of head scratching as critics try to make sense of it all.

LUMIA: GOD’S OWN LIGHT

In the cosmic realm we think of the Northern Lights as God’s own Lumia light, produced by Mother Nature.

LUMIA & THE BIG BANG

Lumia blog big bang

Having just completed my first Lumia projector, I set it up for a test run and when I turned it on, the control board exploded and caught fire. As I watched the board burn, I thought, Hmmm, this is gonna…

GODFATHER OF THE MODERN LIGHTSHOW

Lumia blog Wilfred & Clavilux

“Light is the artist’s sole medium of expression, and it demands that the artist must be a choreographer in time and space.”

LUMIA LIGHT SCULPTURE – WHY?

Lumia blog Why?

Lumia art is a “sometimes” art. Sometimes you can see it, sometimes you don’t. Mostly it’s in the “don’t” category.

SACRED DESTINATIONS – The Book

Sacred Destinations and Journeys Along The Way is an art book and a visual dissertation on Destinations and Journeys and all that lies in between as you connect from one to the other.

LUMIA:
ART APPRECIATION: FROM NOTHING TO SOMETHING

What's the difference between a Lumia image and a Jackson Pollack, a Monet, a Dali or an Andy Warhol painting?

Art Appreciation

NOTHING !

It's all art and all appreciated by the beholder and their preferences for art that impresses and inspires them. As for Lumia, it's been "lost" for decades, and now found again, slowly making its way back as an art medium as something to be seen and appreciated.

LUMIA: DID YOU SAY PAINTING?

Lumia pix

In the early years of Lumia trying to find it's own niche in the fine art world, Thomas Wilfred who discovered and promoted Lumia, put forth the notion of Lumia being a form of 'animated painting.'  Animated - definitely. But the concept of an animated painting gives one a moment of pause. Can a "painting" be animated and still be a painting?

LUMIA LIGHT SHINES ON

Light is a very important part of our life - it's the first thing we see when we wake up - it's the last thing we see before we close our eyes to sleep. It illuminates all our rooms and keeps the darkness at bay. It keeps us healthy as a vitamin D supplement. It's part of our food security as a major component of photosynthesis that helps plants develop and grow. It's part of our history, our culture and our entertainment.

Speaking of entertainment, Lumia's emergence began when its discoverer, Thomas Wilfred displayed Lumia recitals during the 1920s in town halls and in auditoriums, just about anywhere throughout the United States and Europe as he could.

QUE ES LUMIA?
WHAT IS LUMIA?

For those just learning about Lumia, it is a form of textured light that looks like smoke, was developed in the 1920s, and came and went as an art form as it has been overshadowed in succeeding decades by other more prominent art mediums. It had in effect become, "The Lost Light." But it's been found and is now an art form in a renaissance.
